Neutralizing the Memory and Redirecting It
As a psychotherapist, I can confirm that this exercise draws upon one of the deepest mechanisms in neuropsychology: "memory reconsolidation" and "conditioned association decoupling."
Names are not mere letters — they are "launch buttons" that trigger cascades of emotional chemistry in the brain. When we try to erase the name, we resist the brain, and resistance deepens the fixation. But when we use the very same name as a "passcode" to an entirely new story, we perform a "hijacking" of the neural pathway.
We withdraw the emotional charge from the pain of longing — and inject it into an immersive, pleasurable imagined experience.
