When threat mechanisms remain engaged, physiological and psychological adaptations can persist long after the external environment has become safe. These ongoing responses may affect multiple domains of functioning:

  • Attention & Concentration: Difficulty sustaining focus, heightened distractibility, or intrusive focus on potential risks.
  • Memory & Integration: Fragmented recall, vivid sensory intrusions, or difficulty contextualizing events in time.
  • Emotional Regulation: Rapid shifts in intensity, emotional numbing, persistent fear, sadness, or irritability.
  • Body Sensations: Unexplained muscle tightness, altered heart rate, digestive shifts, or physical restlessness.
  • Behavior & Relationships: Hyper-vigilance, social withdrawal, difficulty establishing trust, or conflict avoidance.
  • Sense of Safety: Persistent internal sense of danger, unpredictability, or vulnerability.

Individual Variability

AMYGDALA
Threat Detection

Evaluates incoming sensory data for potential danger. Under stress, it can trigger rapid physiological alarm responses before conscious reflection occurs.

Organizes experiences into time and place. High stress and arousal can affect memory processing and contextualization, which may contribute to memories feeling unusually vivid, immediate, or difficult to place in context.

Supports logical reasoning, impulse control, and emotional modulation. High levels of stress and arousal can interfere with some prefrontal functions involved in reflection, planning, and regulation.

These systems work together. Trauma does not simply "turn off" one part of the brain; stress can alter the balance and timing of their activity.

In a resilient nervous system, arousal rises in response to demands and naturally settles when safety is restored. Trauma-related patterns may involve becoming activated too easily, remaining activated for extended periods, or shifting rapidly into shutdown when overwhelmed.

Common Trauma-Related Response Patterns

"Fight, Flight, Freeze, and Fawn" are commonly used terms in trauma education to describe patterns of behavioral and physiological responding that may occur when a person perceives threat.

FIGHT Mobilization Against Threat

An active survival pattern aimed at confronting or overpowering a perceived threat.

Possible Expressions:

  • Irritability, sudden anger, or defensive posture
  • Urge to control surroundings or relationships
  • Strict boundary enforcement or confrontation
  • Internal sense of needing to resist harm
FLIGHT Mobilization to Escape

An active survival pattern aimed at escaping or distancing oneself from danger.

Possible Expressions:

  • Chronic restlessness or difficulty slowing down
  • Avoidance of distressing topics, places, or people
  • Overworking, perfectionism, or constant busy-ness
  • Persistent urgency or panic-like drive
FREEZE Inhibition & Immobility

A passive survival pattern triggered when active escape or defense feels impossible.

Possible Expressions:

  • Feeling physically heavy, stuck, or ungrounded
  • Mental fog, difficulty making decisions
  • Emotional numbness or detachment
  • Procrastination linked to sensory overload
FAWN Relational Appeasement

A commonly described protective pattern involving attempts to reduce perceived threat through appeasement, compliance, or conflict avoidance.

Possible Expressions:

  • Automatic compliance or conflict avoidance
  • Difficulty expressing genuine needs or saying "no"
  • Hyper-attunement to others' emotional states
  • Prioritizing others' safety over one's own

Educational Distinction: Fight, Flight, and Freeze have established roots in physiological research on animal and human defensive responses. "Fawn" is a widely used trauma-education concept rather than a standalone psychiatric diagnosis.

Adaptive Survival Responses

These responses developed in the service of protection. A strategy that was useful in an unsafe environment may remain easily activated after the original danger has passed. Recovery begins with understanding the protective function rather than judging the response.

Somatic Responses & Body-Based Experiences

"The Body Keeps the Score" — The phrase "the body keeps the score" is often used to describe how past stress can continue to influence bodily sensations, physiological arousal, muscle tension, and automatic responses. It is a useful metaphor, not a claim that memories are literally stored in isolated body parts.

How Somatic Responses Occur

The brain and body continuously exchange signals. When sensory cues resemble aspects of a prior stressful experience, brain and autonomic systems may contribute to bodily responses before a person has consciously interpreted the cue.
